New Zealand on 03 March 2016 began the final vote on whether to change its current flag to a new design featuring a silver fern. The postal ballot will last for three weeks, from 03 to 24 March, and voters should receive their ballot papers in the coming week, electoral authorities said. New Zealanders have a straight choice between the current flag, which shows the four stars of the Southern Cross and the British Union Jack, and the new design which features the same constellation but with a silver fern - a national symbol - instead of the British emblem. The new design was selected by a public poll last year, which first selected a shortlist of five designs, and then narrowed down the finalists in several rounds of voting. Les Néo-Zélandais ont commencé à voter, hier, pour doter ou non leur pays d’un nouveau drapeau lors d’un référendum présenté par le premier ministre John Key comme l’occasion de supprimer de la bannière actuelle l’Union Jack, symbolisant le colonisateur britannique. Après 18 mois de débats passionnés, les électeurs de ce pays du Pacifique sud doivent choisir entre le drapeau actuel, qui est, selon John Key, une «relique coloniale», et une nouvelle alternative, un dessin où figure une fougère argentée assimilé par certains critiques à une «serviette de plage laide».

Près de trois millions de bulletins de vote sont distribués à travers ce pays de 4,5 millions d’habitants pour cette consultation, effectuée uniquement par voie postale et qui s’achèvera le 24 mars.
